Storytime Sunday

Standard

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis was one of my favourite book when I was little – so much so that when I was six I went to school dressed up as Pixie Pat on World Book Day (complete with a massive red paper cone on my head – thanks mum!)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I found it while staying at my parents recently and really enjoyed rediscovering the cute little animals and quirky illustration style…

I love the vintage colours and particularly like the trees with their mix of white and brights…

Rosie’s Walk

Standard

I was very excited to find this book in our local library today; ‘Rosie’s Walk’ by Pat Hutchins.  I remember it vaguely from when I was small so it’s great to see again and fully appreciate with older eyes…

Absolutely love the colours! As well as the design, pattern, drawing… just love it all!

The book has really clear, simple lettering for Elsie to follow as we read…

And perfect humour for a little one too!

A worthy winner for our ‘A Little Book Award’ this week! 🙂

Charley Harper

Standard

This week’s ‘A Little Book Award’ (judged by myself and Elsie) goes to ABC’s by Charley Harper

Every time I see something by Charley Harper I am instantly drawn towards it.  His designs are so unusual and unique, I absolutely love them.

Sadly Harper died in 2007.  When once asked to describe his art style, he replied, “When I look at a wildlife or nature subject, I don’t see the feathers in the wings, I just count the wings. I see exciting shapes, color combinations, patterns, textures, fascinating behavior and endless possibilities for making interesting pictures…”

To read all about his life and work, and to see more of his amazing illustrations check out this website.

 Loving the back page!

Clare Beaton

Standard

The book Elsie and I are loving this week is called ‘I dreamt I was a dinosaur’ by Stella Blackstone and illustrated by Clare Beaton…

Each page is so cute!

Clare uses felt and a collection of vintage buttons, sequins and ribbons to create her lovely hand stitched designs.

Also Elsie enjoys finding the snail hidden on each page!

Gorgeous 🙂

For more info check out Clare’s website here.

Here comes Frankie!

Standard

The favourite book in our house this week is ‘Here comes Frankie!’ by Tim Hopgood

‘Frankie and his parents live a quiet life.  But when Frankie decides to learn the trumpet, EVERYTHING begins to change…’

A great read – whilst Elsie appreciates the pets, trumpet, shiny pages and any pictures of food, I appreciate the patterns, textures and beautiful detail on every page…

Frankie’s parents may be a bit dull but they certainly know how to decorate a home…

Love these cute little birds…

The book builds up page by page to a great explosion of colour and fun…

Really lovely 🙂

William Morris

Standard

As promised here are my favourite William Morris print photos taken on our recent trip to Red House…

‘Thistle’ – one of Morris’ most popular wallpapers, a single colour design.

‘Indian’ – a reproduction of a early paper from 1868- 1870

‘Honeycombe’

‘Red House’ – inspired by one of the painted ceilings at Morris’ house (unfortunately didn’t see the ceiling…)

Here is a block print used to create the designs…

Sunflower – the wallpaper in Red House’s dining room…

Marigold – wallpaper on display in one of the upstairs rooms…

And I’m pretty sure this rug is not William Morris but i liked it anyway!
